Flinder Boyd isn’t your typical sportswriter. After graduating from Dartmouth, where he holds the school’s record for assists and assists in a single game (15), Flinder went on to play for several teams all over Europe, including the UK, Spain and France, and a few stints with the Great Britain national basketball team. After hanging up his jersey(s), Flinder started writing about the game that had been a part of his life for so long. His first article, the Ricky Rubio Experience, appeared on the Classical in 2012. Since that time, Flinder’s written for SBNation, Newsweek, Sports on Earth, Aeon and FOX Sports. His story, Twenty Minutes in Rucker Park is included in the 2014 Best American Sportswriting anthology.

Today, Flinder joins me to talk about his unorthodox journey from baller to writer. Does he still see himself as an athlete, or is his main identity now one of a writer? Where did he learn to write? What were his favorite stories, and what were the toughest ones? Most importantly, of course, has he used his appearance in Best American Sportswriting to his advantage yet, or at least permanently affixed it to his name?
